The Ministry of Finance has failed to release the Weekly Fiscal Development Report for the past three weeks. The last report was released on 20 June.
While the report has had publishing delays in the past, this marks the first time it has seen extended delays since January.
According to the figures released in June, revenue for the year as of 20 June saw a rise of approximately MVR 1 billion compared to the same period last year — the state had received MVR 16.4 billion in 2024 compared to MVR 15.4 billion in the same period last year.
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had, on Thursday night, called out the Mohamed Muizzu administration for failing to publish the state’s financials, saying that regularly published reports were now being kept confidential.
Yameen described some of the expenditure by the administration as inconsistent with the nation’s current financial standing; specifically highlighting the Rasmalé project, the purchase of drones, and the administration’s expenditure on ceremonies.
“I know of a time when the people of the Maldives ate ‘magoo‘ leaves. Of course, the leaders in Malé would not have eaten magoo leaves. They are telling us to drink bitter medicine. The leaders in Malé do not take bitter medicine. The bitter medicine has to be taken by the lowly Maldivian people… When will we be able to savour a drop of honey after taking all this bitter medicine? There is no way that will happen. There is no way for a drop of honey,” Yameen said.
Measures should be put in place to avoid the difficulties ahead and the administration should speak truthfully and explain everything to the public, the former leader said, going on to say that he found the administration’s current actions “unsettling.”
