Italy’s antitrust regulator, AGCM, on Wednesday imposed fines on Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram (META.O), for what it deemed unfair commercial practices.
According to AGCM, Instagram users were inadequately informed about the utilisation of their personal data for commercial purposes, as per the regulator’s statement. Additionally, Facebook and Instagram users lacked proper information on contesting account suspensions.
The regulator noted that Meta has already taken measures to rectify these issues. “We disagree with the Italian competition authority’s decision and are assessing our options,” stated a Meta spokesperson. They further added that since August 2023, Meta has implemented several changes for Italian users, including enhanced transparency regarding data usage for advertising on Instagram.
