The Maldives has exported 58,761 metric tonnes of fish as of September in 2023, according to data released by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). Fish exports increased by 7.8 percent over the same period last year, the central bank confirmed, with data indicating the country had exported 54,528 metric tonnes in the same period last year.
According to statistics, skipjack tuna was the most exported variety, accounting for 41,277 metric tonnes, while 5,716 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna were also exported.
In addition, 10,087 metric tonnes were exported as canned and poached tuna.
In terms of monthly fish exports; 8,574 metric tonnes were exported in January, 7,149 metric tonnes in February, 11,975 metric tonnes in March 7,383 metric tonnes in April, 9,648 metric tonnes in May, 6,910 metric tonnes June, 3,189 metric tonnes in July, 1,848 metric tonnes in August and 2,083 metric tonnes exported in September.
According to the MMA, the price of skipjack tuna in September, in the global market, stood at MVR 27.8 per kilogramme.
