The Maldives’ Ambassador in China, Fazeel Najeeb, has met with the Vice President of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The meeting centred on exploring collaboration opportunities in trade and financial matters, according to the Maldives Embassy in China. Both parties agreed to convene additional meetings to delve into the specifics of their discussions, according to the Maldives’ Embassy in Beijing.

CNPC is an integrated international energy conglomerate that operates in oil, gas, new energies, refining, chemicals, marketing, and new materials. With the Chinese government holding an 82 percent stake, CNPC ranks fourth on the 2022 Fortune Global 500 list.

Ambassador Najeeb assumed his role as the Maldives’ Ambassador to China on 7 May. Before this appointment, he served as the Ambassador at Large at the Foreign Ministry and held positions such as State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

China, a close ally of the current Mohamed Muizzu administration, has seen a surge in high-level ministerial visits following the signing of 20 agreements during President Muizzu’s trip to Beijing in January. The Muizzu administration has so far kept most details of these agreements secret.
