Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin reaffirmed China’s continued cooperation and assistance in the Maldives’ development efforts during a ceremony marking China’s 75th National Day at Dharubaaruge in Malé on Monday.

Ambassador Wang, speaking at the event, highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two nations, describing it as an exemplary model of cooperation between a small and a large country. She emphasised that the partnership, built on mutual trust and respect, has brought prosperity to both countries.

Wang cited key development projects as evidence of the strong relationship, including the Sinamalé Bridge, various housing initiatives, and the Velana International Airport (VIA) development project. She also mentioned ongoing projects such as the construction of a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimalé and road development projects in Malé and Vilimalé, aimed at improving infrastructure and services in the capital.

Ambassador Wang noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s first official visit to China earlier this year elevated bilateral relations to a new level. The two heads of state agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, further strengthening ties between the nations. Wang reiterated China’s full commitment to supporting the Maldives’ future development, with plans to expand cooperation in areas such as tourism, agriculture, fishery, trade, and investment.

In her remarks, Wang also praised the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen its economy, promote sustainable development, and lead initiatives among Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly in addressing climate change. She expressed confidence in the Maldives’ continued progress under the leadership of the Muizzu government and assured China’s cooperation in international forums.

“The Maldives may be small, but its vision is big; its resources may be limited, but its potential is unlimited,” Wang said, lauding the resilience of the Maldivian people. She added that China is committed to supporting the Maldives in exploring a development path that suits its unique national conditions.

Wang further extended her gratitude to the Maldivian government, the People’s Majlis, and all sectors of society for their continued support of the Chinese Embassy and for promoting the friendly relations between the two countries.

“May I wish both China and the Maldives prosperity, our two peoples happiness and well-being,” she said.
