Mohamed Aslam, the vice-presidential hopeful from the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP), has spoken highly of the incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s integrity and sincerity as the head of state.
Addressing the inauguration of a campaign outpost for the coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) in Hulhumale’, Aslam expressed his profound trust in President Solih’s transparency in governance and his earnest commitment to the state’s finances.
He highlighted President Solih’s adept handling of the state economy, particularly his astute guidance in steering the country through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. As evidence of this, Aslam pointed to President Solih’s effective navigation of the country during the pandemic, demonstrating the qualities of a skilled economist and a leader genuinely concerned for the welfare of the people.
Aslam remarked, “He managed the pandemic’s impact on the country with the wisdom of a skilled economist and a leader who prioritised the people’s welfare. He has never misappropriated state funds and manages his responsibilities based solely on his official earnings.”
Addressing the contrasting viewpoints on President Solih’s pandemic management from his adversaries, Aslam highlighted the party’s approach during such uncertain times. He recalled that the MDP initially took office during the 2008 global financial crisis, when the government was compelled to sell state assets, downsize the state workforce, and revise salaries for state employees.
Aslam reiterated that President Solih’s ability to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic without resorting to previous austerity measures showcased his proficiency as an extremely capable head of state. He urged his supporters and voters not to be swayed by unfounded claims from opponents and to base their votes on factual information.
