The body of a man who jumped into the sea near the Rasfannu beach on Wednesday night has been found, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has confirmed.

The police said they received a report of a 41-year old man jumping into the sea near the Rasfannu beach area at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, and a search operation was launched shortly after.

“The body was found by the crew of an MTCC ferry near Dhoonidhoo,” the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said.

Police said the body was found floating in the sea between Dhoonidhoo and Funadhoo at around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday.

“A police officer who attended the scene jumped into the sea to rescue him. However, before swimming to reach the man, he disappeared,” police said.

MNDF searched an area of 41,590 square metres in an attempt to find him.

The body was brought to Malé and handed over to his family, the police said.

Authorities have not released the identity of the individual.
