A Japanese lawmaker has passed away while vacationing in the Maldives. Japanese media reports say the deceased was Toshiyuki Adachi, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) said it responded to a report that a 70-year-old Japanese tourist had been found unresponsive in the sea while snorkelling near a resort in Lhaviyani Atoll at 8:33 a.m. on Friday.

Police have not disclosed further details but confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Adachi, originally from Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan, was elected to the House of Councillors, the upper house of the National Diet, in 2016. He had previously served as vice minister for engineering affairs at the land ministry.
