The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned of heavy rains and strong winds in the northern and central parts of the country, from Haa Alifu Atoll to Meemu Atoll.
Residents and seafarers in the affected areas are advised to prepare for gusts ranging between 25 and 30 miles per hour, with the possibility of winds reaching up to 50 miles per hour during showers. The forecast also warns of rough seas accompanying the stormy conditions.
The forecast comes at a time of increased sea travel as many people return to Male’ after spending the Eid al-Adha holidays in the outer islands. The authorities are advising boat operators to exercise caution and check the weather forecasts before setting out on their journeys.
Recent data from the Met Office has highlighted the intensity of the rainfall in the region. Gaafaru Island in Kaafu Atoll recorded 67.7 millimetres of rain over the past 24 hours. Similarly, in Baa Atoll, Goidhoo and Dharavandhoo Islands experienced substantial rainfall, measuring 61.2 and 20.5 millimetres, respectively.
