Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef released a cryptic message on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

“Everything is subject to time. That is the way of the world. True respect and happiness come from valuing and appreciating the time we have. Remember, nothing is an eternal right,” he wrote in a post on his official X account.

The purpose and the person Latheef’s message is aimed at remain unclear, as this is the first time he has expressed such a sentiment since assuming office.

Latheef, a former Member of Parliament, was a close ally of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom before taking office. His selection as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vice presidential running mate was reportedly at Yameen’s behest. However, following Muizzu’s election, a significant rift developed between him and Yameen, which has now extended to Latheef, who is currently seen as less active in political affairs.

Yameen’s supporters now largely view both Muizzu and Latheef as betrayers and have been vocal in their criticism of the current government.

The reasons behind the fallout between President Muizzu and Latheef have been the subject of speculation, and the Vice President is reportedly excluded from key decisions.
