The Directorate of Aviation Security Administration (DASA) has officially confirmed that Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new passenger terminal meets comprehensive international aviation security standards.

The announcement was made by Chief Inspector Ahmed Nasheed, Head of DASA Aviation Security, as part of Maldives Airports Company Ltd’s (MACL) ongoing video series showcasing preparations for the terminal’s grand opening on 26 July, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence.

According to Chief Inspector Nasheed, the facility’s security infrastructure, including its state-of-the-art Baggage Handling System (BHS), aligns with global best practices and regulatory requirements. He noted that the technology deployed in the new terminal reflects the same standards used in the world’s most advanced aviation hubs.

“As the aviation security regulatory authority, we recognise that the security standards implemented within this new terminal are exceptionally comprehensive,” Nasheed said. “The deployment of modern security technologies will provide passengers travelling to the Maldives with complete safety assurance.”

He added that the security enhancements would help accommodate increased airline operations, with the terminal expected to support a significant expansion of international carriers serving the Maldives.

The validation from DASA affirms the terminal’s readiness to handle higher passenger volumes and airline activity, a critical component of the government’s strategy to bolster tourism-driven economic growth.

Chief Inspector Nasheed also described the new terminal as a transformative step in strengthening the Maldives’ status as a premier global destination, stating that robust security protocols are fundamental to sustaining long-term growth in tourism and aviation.

The new terminal, financed by over US$450 million in funding — including US$180 million from the Saudi Fund for Development and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development — will have the capacity to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually. It is set to fully replace the existing terminal within three months of opening.

Preparations for the inauguration are in full swing. MACL recently commenced resurfacing works on the airport’s main access road, with nightly lane closures in effect until Sunday, 7 July. The work is being carried out in phases between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., with Estate Security Service personnel managing traffic and ensuring public safety.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, as the safety of airport users remains our top priority,” MACL said in a statement.
