A project to reclaim 63 hectares of land under the development plan for Hulhumalé phase III began on Friday.

Land is being reclaimed from the northwest end of the tunnel where the bridges connecting the two phases of Hulhumalé are located.

An Urbanco spokesperson said the reclamation work is being carried out in stages and the first stage is expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks.

Urbanco, which manages the development of Hulhumalé, has not yet revealed a detailed plan for phase III.

While Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company Limited is the main contractor for the project, the reclamation work is being undertaken by Boskalis Westminster N.V.

More than 19,000 people will be allocated land under the government’s Binveriya scheme, with 1,400 plots allocated in Hulhumalé, including phase III.
