Member of Parliament (MP) for North Mahchangolhi Ibrahim Muhammad has said that children should be treated as adults once they reach puberty, following reports of a clash between a 14-year-old boy and a police officer in Meedhoo Island of Raa Atoll.

In a post on X, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) MP, who is the brother of First Lady Saajidha Mohamed and linked to the religious NGO Salaf, commented on the incident, questioning whether the boy should be considered a child.

“A child? Such crimes cannot be stopped unless after puberty we see them as adults,” he wrote.

It is unclear what led to the altercation, but police have launched an investigation. Authorities allege the boy attacked the officer after being asked to go to the police station, while the boy’s family claims the officer assaulted him.

A video of the incident circulating on social media shows the boy and the police officer grappling and tackling each other to the ground.
