The newly appointed British High Commissioner to the Maldives, Nicholas David Low, and Japan’s new Ambassador, Ishigami Rumiko, met separately with Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel on Tuesday, after presenting their letters of credence to President Mohamed Muizzu.
During the meeting, Khaleel congratulated Low and discussed cooperation in areas including education and climate change, as well as strengthening bilateral ties.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the two officials explored “various collaborative efforts in areas including education, climate change and enhancing the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and the United Kingdom.”
Low expressed his commitment to deepening the partnership during his tenure.
Khaleel also met with Japan’s new Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko on Tuesday, and congratulated her on presenting her credentials to President Muizzu earlier in the day.

During the meeting, Khaleel emphasised the “enduring friendship and close partnership” between the Maldives and Japan, noting the significant contributions Japan has made through its official development programme and Grassroots Project schemes, which have positively impacted local communities.
Ishigami expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Both officials agreed to deepen people-to-people exchanges and further enhance cooperation between the two countries.
Khaleel was accompanied by senior Foreign Ministry officials, including Foreign Secretary Fathimath Inaya and Ambassador-at-Large Abdullah Hameed, during both meetings.
