A foreign national involved in a brawl at Artificial Beach in Malé city earlier this month has been arrested and is being deported, the Maldives Immigration has said.
The individual, identified as 25-year-old Amrit Singh, was arrested with with the assistance of police, according to the agency. While the Maldives Immigration has not disclosed Singh’s nationality, video footage of the incident suggests those involved were likely Indian nationals.
“The primary foreigner involved in the physical assault at the Artificial Beach area on December 6, 2024, was located with assistance from the Maldives Police Service and has been taken into detention, and the deportation process is currently underway,” the agency said in a post on X.
The melee, which occurred during the afternoon of 6 December, left a child in the area injured.
Artificial Beach and public spaces such as Republic Square are popular gathering spots for foreign nationals during weekends. While such areas often host large crowds, incidents of violence are considered rare.
