The Malé City Council on Thursday approved to have a street named after Palestine.

Mayor Adam Azim proposed for consideration by council members the idea of naming one of the two unnamed streets in the city, or even another street, as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Azim suggested that the street could be named “Falasteen Hingun,” translated as “Palestine Walk,” or any other name that carries similar evocative significance.

All but one member at the meeting expressed support for naming a street after Palestine.

Council Member Mohamed Saif Fathih, during Thursday’s meeting, said that he considers this to be a very opportune time for the Maldives to express its solidarity with the Palestinian people given current events in the Palestinian territories.

Azim said the exact name, and other details, would be shared with the members later and a ceremony would be held to inaugurate the street.
