The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened nominations for key positions within its parliamentary group, with elections scheduled for 28 May, coinciding with the swearing-in of lawmakers elected to the 20th parliament.

The leadership positions up for election include the roles of parliamentary group leader, two deputy leaders, secretary general and a deputy, and chief whip, along with two additional whips.

The MDP, which held a supermajority in the outgoing 19th parliament, suffered an unexpected setback in the parliamentary elections held on 21 April. The party managed to secure only 12 seats in the 93-member parliament.
