Airlines operating to the Maldives have expressed confidence that the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will provide “world-class service standards” following successful operational trials ahead of its launch later this month.
The terminal, which is scheduled to open on 26 July, underwent comprehensive operational testing that simulated the entire passenger journey—from check-in and baggage handling to boarding and arrival procedures.
“Airlines have long awaited world-class service standards in the Maldives. The New Terminal will deliver this level of service, and airlines are extremely pleased with this development,” said Munaz Ali, Chairman of the Airlines Operators Committee and Airport Manager for Etihad Airways.
The trials were conducted by Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL), with active participation and observation from airline operators. Their purpose was to validate the terminal’s operational readiness across critical systems and ensure seamless coordination among all stakeholders.
“With the New Terminal, the Maldives will be prominently showcased to visiting passengers. This will provide a distinctly different experience for travellers,” said Ahmed Nahushan Nizar, Vice Chairman of the Airlines Operators Committee and Airport Service Manager for Qatar Airways.
MACL said the successful trials confirm the terminal’s ability to provide a seamless check-in experience, optimised passenger flow, modern boarding bridges, and upgraded baggage claim and customs areas.
“MACL has facilitated comprehensive access to the terminal’s full capabilities for all citizens. The New Terminal will be complete, beautiful, passenger-friendly, and thoroughly modern,” said Ahmed Hanam Faiz, Station Manager for Malaysia Airlines.
The state-owned airport operator said it is now completing final preparations ahead of the official launch, with the terminal expected to significantly improve the overall travel experience for visitors to the country.
