Police entered the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the country’s central bank, on Wednesday and Thursday to investigate the alleged leak of personal information about an employee, officials have confirmed.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan told local media that the central bank had sought police assistance in the matter.
“It was a case of leaking personal information of an employee of the authority. When the MMA reported it, the police are investigating it,” Shifan said, without providing further details.
Sources familiar with the case said the investigation centres on a post made on the anonymous whistleblower account ‘Hassan Kurusee’ on X, formerly Twitter. The post alleged that a newly appointed managing director of the MMA was selected due to the influence of First Lady Sajida Mohamed.
On both Wednesday and Thursday, police entered the MMA offices and reportedly seized a laptop and documents from an employee, sources said.
The MMA confirmed that its internal audit team had launched an investigation into the social media leak of personal information and was working with police to address the matter.
This case mirrors a previous incident involving the same whistleblower account, which had shared a photo of President Muizzu and the First Lady during an unofficial visit to Singapore. After the post was shared, a Maldivian businessman had his phone confiscated by court order upon his return to the Maldives from Singapore.
