Levan S. Dzhagaryan, the Russian Federation’s Ambassador to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, on Wednesday expressed Russia’s displeasure over a social media post by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Gayoom had expressed personal concern over the lack of action on the part of the United Nations Security Council after a BBC report appeared to confirm that Russia had carried out two days of unrelenting airstrikes in Ukraine this week.
“Does UN Security Council still exist? BBC says Russia had launched massive air attacks on Ukraine during the last two nights. But no news of any UN reaction!” Gayoom said in a post to social media.
Dzhagaryan, posting on several official social media pages for the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, called the former President’s post ‘unacceptable.’
“I kindly remind to Mr. Gayoom that the barbarian actions by Zelensky administration lead to numerous victims among the civic population of Donbass. One should wonder why Mr. Gayoom is not bothered by these issues,” the ambassador said, going on to call out Gayoom’s musings on the UN Security Council as “following the policy of double standards traditionally pursued by the collective West.”
Gayoom consistently posts comments to social media on world affairs in English; including on the ongoing genocide of Palestinians by Israeli forces as well as on other news.
Russia and the Ukraine, in March 2022 in Istanbul, were close to a peaceful settlement of the conflict, the Ambassador said, going on to blame the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK) for disrupting the talks. Volodymyr Zelenskyy was ‘instructed’ to continue the war, Dzhagaryan said.
According to the Ambassador, Russia has, on four separate occasions, taken the initiative to go forward with peaceful initiatives; the last of which, according to the diplomat, was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in June.
“The ex-politician had better express his indignation with the UN Security Council inability to put an end to the Palestinian people sufferings in the Gaza Strip “thanks” to one country[‘s] negative stance,” Dzhagaryan said.
The Russian diplomat concluded his statement by praising the Mohamed Muizzu administration for their principled position on the Palestinian issue.
