President Mohamed Muizzu met with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Sunday as part of his ongoing state visit to India. The discussions at the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation across key sectors and further deepening relations between the two countries.

Muizzu and Jaishankar reviewed ongoing cooperation initiatives backed by the Indian government, concentrating on affordable housing, healthcare services, tourism promotion, and expanding the Maldives’ fisheries and agriculture sectors. Both the President and the Minister emphasised the importance of these areas in improving the welfare of the Maldivian people and explored potential new avenues for cooperation in line with the Maldives’ current development priorities.

President Muizzu expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Indian government, while Jaishankar welcomed the opportunity to strengthen ties further. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen collaboration between the two nations.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Pleased to call on President @MMuizzu today at the start of his State Visit to India. Appreciate his commitment to enhance India-Maldives relationship. Confident that his talks with PM @narendramodi tomorrow will give a new impetus to our friendly ties.”

Muizzu’s visit to India comes at the invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu. He arrived in New Delhi on Sunday, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level Maldivian delegation. During the visit, Muizzu is set to meet with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior officials.

The President will also visit Mumbai and Bangalore later this week to further bolster relations between the neighbouring nations.
