Tremors were felt in parts of the Maldives late Wednesday after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the Nicobar Islands in India, the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) said.

The quake occurred at 11:41 p.m. local time and was recorded at the Kaadedhdhoo monitoring station in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll at 11:48 p.m., according to MET Office. The agency confirmed the earthquake did not generate a tsunami and posed no threat to the Maldives.

The distance between the Maldives and the Nicobar Islands is approximately 2,275 kilometres. Indian media, citing authorities, also reported that the quake posed no threat to any country in the Indian Ocean region.

Many residents in the capital city, Malé, took to social media late Wednesday night to report feeling the tremors. MET Office said at the time that the earthquake would not pose any danger to the country, but it did not confirm any tremors had been felt in the Maldives until hours later.
