A major power outage affected the Greater Malé region on Sunday, including Malé, Hulhumalé, and Velana International Airport. However, airport operations remain unaffected as Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) confirmed the activation of backup generators.
State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) said the outage was caused by a technical fault, which led to a complete shutdown of the power grid due to what was identified as an “earth fault.”
“Due to a total blackout, the checkups required to be completed before re-energising the Greater Malé grid are now underway,” STELCO said in a statement. “As soon as the checkups are completed, the energising of the gensets will continue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Engineers are currently working to identify and resolve the fault as quickly as possible, STELCO said.
President Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently in Saudi Arabia on the Hajj pilgrimage, addressed the issue via X, stating he had instructed the relevant authorities to treat the incident seriously and to restore electricity without delay.
