Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have surpassed 900,000 so far this year, marking an 8.1% increase compared with the same period in 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Tourism.

A total of 901,210 tourists had visited the country as of 14 May, up from 833,448 recorded during the same period last year. In 2024, the milestone of 900,000 tourists was reached in June.

China remained the Maldives’ largest source market with 103,072 visitors, followed by Russia (97,123), the United Kingdom (93,043), Italy (79,557), and Germany (69,238). Other key markets included India (48,471), France (33,169), the United States (28,310), Switzerland (21,226), and Poland (16,151).

The average daily arrivals so far this year remain at 6,725, according to the Tourism Ministry.

Resort stays continued to dominate tourist preferences, accounting for 69% of all visitors. Guesthouses hosted 22% of tourists, while 5% stayed aboard safari vessels and 4% opted for city hotels.

Tourism is the main driver of the Maldivian economy, with the sector contributing more than a quarter of the country’s GDP and generating significant foreign exchange earnings.
