Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) will initiate a re-exporting venture, Managing Director (MD) of the state-owned enterprise (SOE), Mohamed Wajeeh, has said.

Speaking during a press conference at MPL headquarters, Wajeeh said the administration is looking to expand its commercial ventures and will soon begin exporting goods imported via sea.

MPL has been in talks with Maldives Customs and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) in order to kick-off the venture, he said.

“There are a lot of goods from different countries coming to the Maldives via Colombo. Freight companies want to send the containers to different parts of the world by air,” he said.

Such a venture will increase revenue for MPL and bolster US dollar income, Wajeeh said, highlighting that discussions had already begun with several airlines, with agreements already reached.
