The Japanese government has donated 54 patrol vehicles to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to assist enhancing the agency’s law enforcement capabilities. The donation, which includes both patrol cars and vans, was officially handed over at a ceremony held at the MPS Iskandar Koshi station.

Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori presented the vehicles to Police Commissioner Ali Shujau. Speaking at the event, Commissioner Shujau cited the critical role these vehicles would play in ensuring the safety and security of the general public. “With the increasing criminal activities, we must bolster our policing efforts by establishing the necessary resources,” he said.

Commissioner Shujau expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for their support, highlighting not only the immediate impact of the donation but also the ongoing assistance provided by Japan to the MPS. “These patrol vehicles will significantly strengthen our operational capacity,” he added.

Ambassador Takeuchi underscored the importance the Japanese government places on assisting law enforcement agencies in the Maldives. She expressed hope that the vehicles would enhance the Maldives Police Service’s ability to carry out its operations more effectively.

The donation extends beyond patrol vehicles. Earlier contributions from Japan included patrol cars, marine vessels, drug and precursor field test kits, and Raman handheld field identification devices.
