A teacher and a student at Addu High School have been suspended following a video of a physical altercation that went viral on social media.
Videos show the teacher and the student fighting in a classroom. Separate clips depict the student physically abusing the teacher.
Education Ministry officials confirmed the student was suspended and instructed to attend an ethics programme. The ministry also suspended the teacher for touching the student during the incident. The case involving the teacher has been referred to police.
Once the teacher was suspended and the matter was reported to police, additional videos emerged showing the student abusing the teacher. This led to the student’s suspension.
Media reports, citing the student’s classmates, say the teacher had been abused by the student for months, and the behaviour was known within the school.
