A fire broke out on a safari boat in Vaavu Atoll on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The incident occurred on the Yasawa Princess, a dive yacht used for liveaboard trips. The vessel can accommodate up to 56 guests in 28 double or twin ensuite cabins across three decks.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said the fire was reported at 18:48.

Police said all those on board were rescued and taken to Felidhoo island in Vaavu Atoll. Those rescued included 17 guests and eight crew members.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and officials had not confirmed whether it had been brought under control.

A photograph released by MNDF showed part of the vessel engulfed in flames.
