The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that it is investigating a case filed by the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation regarding the alleged disappearance of several electronic devices. The case was lodged on 20 December.

This incident transpired after a significant administrative overhaul initiated by President Mohamed Muizzu. The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment was split into two distinct entities post-inauguration. The newly minted ministries include the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, under the stewardship of Abdulla Rafiu, and the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, helmed by Ibrahim Waheed.

Local media reports suggest that the disappearance of the electronic devices coincided with the partitioning of the two ministries, a process that entailed the redistribution of departments, personnel, and assets. The missing items include a 65-inch television set, two Central Processing Units (CPUs), and six computer monitors, local media reported.

The Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage pertaining to the incident was expunged between 26 and 27 November, according to local media reports. While the MPS has confirmed to Maldives Republic that an investigation into the alleged disappearance of the electronic devices is underway, they have refrained from revealing further details about the ongoing investigation.

The Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation occupies the third floor of the Velaanaage Office Building, which previously housed the former youth ministry. The current Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts is located on the fourth floor of the same building.
