The Progressive Congress coalition, made up of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), has postponed its internal primaries to select candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections to January 20. The primaries were originally slated to be held this month.

The party said the date of the primaries was postponed to due to the previously scheduled date falling during school holidays with many traveling abroad. Candidates and members had requested for a date change, the coalition said.

The coalition, in a press release, said that while the date of the primary will be postponed, the names of those contesting in the primary will be announced next week once candidates had been vetted.

The PPM-PNC coalition is looking to retain the winning formula which brought President Muizzu into office, with the hopes of securing a super majority in parliament.
