President Mohamed Muizzu will look to implement a strategic partnership between Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) aimed at modernising, expanding, and sustaining the IASL-operated ‘Maldivian Seaplane’ venture, the President’s Office has confirmed

“The President decided to establish a joint venture company with MACL under the complete control of IASL by April 30, 2025, and to submit the necessary decisions to the Economic Council,” a statement by the President’s Office explained. The decision comes on the heels of a Cabinet proposal by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources aimed at diversifying the Maldives’ economy, the statement said.

Other decisions stemming from the proposal includes the designation of Mariculture Zones at;

  • Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Shaviyani Atoll
  • Raa Atoll
  • Meemu Atoll
  • Thaa Atoll

Additionally, according to the President’s Office, 73 hectares of land, located 7 kilometres south of the Vaadhoo straits, will be designated a commercial-scale reef fish farming area — this effort will also include establishing rules for leasing zones designated for mariculture.
