The Maldives is set to host the South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship for the second consecutive year. The 14th edition of the championship, scheduled from 6 to 10 June, is held under the guidance of the South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation and sanctioned by the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPSF).
WBPSF President Datuk Paul Chua made the announcement, expressing his gratitude to Abdulla Rafiu, the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, for his support and commitment to the sport. “The Minister’s sporting spirit and blessings in holding this regional event is highly applauded by all members of the South Asian countries and by the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation,” Chua stated.
The Bodybuilding Association of Maldives is one of the most active members in Asia and the world, he added, stating that “they have a team of dedicated and highly devoted officials in their management committee.” The event was initially slated to be held in Sri Lanka but was relocated to the Maldives following Sri Lanka’s decision to step down as the host this year.
Last year’s championship, also hosted by the Maldives, saw participation from athletes across six countries: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. The Maldivian athletes put up a stellar performance, clinching four gold medals, four silver medals, and a bronze medal. Mohamed Moosa and Azneen Rashad received the gold medals.
In 2022, the Maldives hosted the 54th Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship on Maafushi Island, Kaafu Atoll. The country first ventured into hosting an international bodybuilding tournament in 2001.
This year, the country is hosting a regional bodybuilding tournament for the third time. The Maldives is also preparing to host the 15th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship in November, further cementing its position as a key player in the world of bodybuilding and physique sports.
