South Hulhumalé MP Ahmed Shamheed has expressed interest in contesting the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) 2028 presidential primary.

In a message to his supporters on Saturday, Shamheed said he is planning a series of meetings to explore the possibility of entering the race.

“I am planning to organise a series of meetings, to explore the possibility of entering the 2028 presidential primaries. I need your support as I take this first step. Thank you,” the message read.

Shamheed first became publicly involved in politics after he was appointed Minister of Transport in 2012, following the controversial transfer of power that ousted then-President Mohamed Nasheed just over halfway through his term.

He received the ministerial portfolio through a slot allocated to Jumhooree Party, led by business tycoon Qasim Ibrahim. However, he later joined the MDP and was elected to the People’s Majlis on an MDP ticket.

Shamheed joins a growing list of potential candidates from within the MDP eyeing the 2028 presidential race. Party Chairperson and opposition leader Fayyaz Ismail has also declared his intention to run.

Meanwhile, party insiders claim former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is actively campaigning, despite not having officially announced his candidacy.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who had earlier promised not to seek another term, is reportedly reconsidering his position and exploring the possibility of contesting again, according to party sources.

Additionally, insiders say Malé City Mayor Adam Azim and former Vice President Faisal Naseem are also considering bids for the party ticket.

The MDP has not yet announced when it will hold its presidential primary, but discussions among potential contenders are already underway.
