The Attorney General’s (AG) Office on Thursday launched a website hailed as a comprehensive repository of Maldivian laws and regulations. The new MVLAW website (https://mvlaw.gov.mv) is aimed at increasing access to information and justice, strengthening the rule of law, increasing transparency and accountability of the government and the legal system of the Maldives.

The website by the AG Office was designed and developed by Javaabu Pvt Ltd with assistance from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the Maldives.

During the launch event held at the AG Office, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath expressed his gratitude to UNDP for its continued assistance in enhancing the justice and legal sector in the Maldives.

“The new MVLAW is such an important and timely intervention. We are taking a significant step towards making laws more accessible, inclusive, public friendly, and responsive to the needs of the people,” Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Maldives, Pek Chuan Gan said at the launch event.

According to the AG Office, the website aims to “transform public accessibility to laws of the Maldives, and assist legal practitioners in improving the efficiency of their legal research.”

MVLAW allows users to search for laws and regulations using keywords, track amendments to laws, download laws and regulations for offline reading, and even bookmark specific articles.

The website includes a Thaana-to-Dhivehi, text-to-speech, function for the visually impaired.

MVLAW, while already mobile friendly, will also launch companion mobile phone apps for Android and iOS within the next week, the AG Office confirmed.
