Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Aishath Rameela resigned from her post on Sunday, citing health issues.
The announcement was made by the President’s Office, which conveyed President Mohamed Muizzu’s gratitude for her contributions.
“Despite her illness, I sincerely thank her for her cooperation, honesty, and discretion in her valuable services to the Government in promoting the rule of law and assisting in the smooth running of this State for the benefit and prosperity of all citizens,” President Muizzu said in the statement.
Dr Rameela was diagnosed with cancer in November 2023 and subsequently travelled abroad for treatment. She returned to work in February 2024 after completing her treatment.
She previously served as State Minister of Health and State Minister of Gender, where she focused on advancing public health and gender equality initiatives.
The government has not announced a replacement for the position.
