The Climate Smart Resilient Islands (CSRI) initiative will play an important role in finding sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by small island nations and increasing climate change awareness, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has said. Thoriq was speaking during the inauguration of the Maldives’ first sideline event at the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).

The event organised by the Environment and Energy Ministry under the moniker ‘From Ambitions to Practice: Advancing SIDS 4 Goals through the Climate Smart Resilient Islands (CSRI) initiative’ was attended by President Mohamed Muizzu and panelists included the Maldives’ Envoy for Climate Change; Ali Shareef, Director General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP); Sefanaia Nawadra, and Grenada’s Director at the Ministry of Climate Resilience the Environment and Renewable Energy; Titus Antoine.

During the inauguration Thoriq highlighted the importance of the CSRI Initiative’s role in finding sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by small island nations and increasing climate change awareness, highlighting that the small island nations at the frontlines of climate change need to work together.

SIDS4, under this year’s theme ‘Charting the Course Towards Resilient Prosperity,’ aims to assess the ability of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to achieve sustainable development, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.
