The driver involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a 23-year-old motorcyclist in Hulhumalé last week has been ordered to remain in custody pending trial.

The court ordered 26-year-old Visaam Sidheeq to remain in custody after it was revealed that he did not possess a valid driving license at the time of the crash. His sports car collided with a motorcycle, fatally injuring the rider, Hassan Samah, 23, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to Hulhumalé Hospital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, with police confirming the accident happened around 2:48 am local time on Bageechaa Hingun, near Central Park.

Following the crash, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu urged authorities to amend laws and regulations to take stricter action against reckless driving, particularly speeding. The president’s call comes amid growing concerns about road safety in the Greater Malé Region.

In a separate incident on Thursday night in Malé, a motorcyclist was seriously injured after reportedly speeding and crashing into a car.
