The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to enhance cooperation in technology.
The agreement seeks to advance collaboration in marine research and environmental protection, though specific details, including its scope, have not been disclosed,
SCSIO, founded in 1959 and based in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is one of China’s largest marine research institutes. It has over 600 staff, including about 100 senior scientists, and supports around 400 students and postdoctoral researchers. The institute primarily conducts research in the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean.
The MoU is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange and joint initiatives between the two institutions, potentially contributing to sustainable marine resource management and climate resilience efforts in the Maldives.
