The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman and opposition leader, Fayyaz Ismail, has announced his intention to contest the party’s primary for the 2028 presidential election.
Fayyaz made the announcement in a WhatsApp group for the party’s National Assembly members, seeking their support. He is the first member of the Maldivian Democratic Party to declare his candidacy for the presidential ticket.
Fayyaz served as economic minister during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. His announcement comes as questions linger over whether Solih, who lost his re-election bid in 2023, will seek another term.
Although Solih has not made a public statement about his intentions, sources close to him have indicated that he may not enter the race.
The MDP has yet to announce when the presidential primary will be held, leaving the timeline for the internal contest unclear.
