Five police recruits are in the ICU at Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) for suspected food poisoning.
A total of 32 recruits from the Police College in Addu City were taken to the hospital, with five currently in the ICU and one in critical condition, police reported.
An AEH official told local media that the recruits arrived at the hospital around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Initially treated in the emergency room, the students were later transferred to the ward.
The official suggested the recruits may have suffered from an allergic reaction to something they consumed.
Police suspect food poisoning as the cause of the illness. Some recruits are expected to return to the college after treatment.
The Police College, which opened on 27 March 2022, with assistance from the Indian government, provides basic police training and specialised courses.
