Immigration authorities arrested two foreigners on Sunday for operating an illegal areca nut processing and packaging business in squalid conditions. The operation, prompted by a tip-off from the Malé City Council, uncovered the unauthorised business being run inside a house.

According to the Immigration Department, the premises were found to be extremely unhygienic, raising serious concerns about the safety of the areca nut being prepared there for consumption. The relevant authorities have been notified, according to the agency.

Photos released by the Immigration Department depict areca nut slices scattered across filthy surfaces, with some being packed for sale after being walked over. Additional images show slices being washed and dried near an unhygienic toilet before packaging.

Areca nut, a common addictive stimulant, is consumed daily by many Maldivians, typically after meals.
