A 32-year-old motorist, seriously injured in a road accident in Fuvahmulah City, has been transferred to Malé for further treatment, according to the Maldives Police Service.

The incident occurred in the Dhoondigan District and was reported to the police on Monday at around 11:43 p.m. The victim was initially treated at Fuvahmulah Hospital before being transferred to Malé early Tuesday morning.

The motorist crashed into a signpost near a pedestrian crossing, according to a police spokesperson. The victim’s condition was reported as severe upon his arrival in Malé.

Fuvahmulah City, the third-largest population centre in the country with over 12,790 residents, spans an area of 491.7 hectares. The city has been grappling with road safety issues. In a similar incident in January, a 30-year-old man died in a road accident.
