The state’s Green Fund disbursed MVR 114 million in the first quarter (Q1) of 2024, according to the Green Fund report released by the Ministry of Finance.
The Fund, which spent MVR 138,907 in January, MVR 93.9 million in February, and MVR 19.8 million in March, collected a total of MVR 316 million in Q1 of 2024 — MVR 113.8 million was received in March alone.
The highest receipts for March, totalling MVR 36 million, were from Kaafu Atoll.
Disbursements from the Fund in March went towards water and sewerage, and beach protection projects.
Total collections for the Fund, as of March, stood at MVR 1.3 billion.
The Green Tax, which is levied on tourist resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and liveaboards, was introduced in the Maldives in October 2016 with the aim of raising funds for various environmental protection efforts across the country.
