Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the Maldives this week for a state visit at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu, the President’s Office said. It will be his first trip to the country since Muizzu assumed office in 2023.

“At the invitation of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, will undertake a state visit to the Maldives from 25 to 26 July 2025,” the President’s Office said in a press release on Sunday.

Modi and Muizzu are expected to hold high-level talks focused on bilateral and regional issues. The visit will also include “the inauguration of several joint projects and the exchange of a number of Memoranda of Understanding aimed at deepening cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest.”

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of both the Maldives’ independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“This visit carries profound significance,” the President’s Office said.

India and the Maldives have traditionally shared close ties, although relations were strained after Muizzu, seen as pro-China, came to power in 2023 and called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the country. Tensions have since eased, as both sides have taken steps to mend fences and re-engage on key issues.

Modi’s visit is seen as an opportunity for both countries to reset ties and seek closer cooperation on regional security.
