Many students who qualified for government student loans and travelled abroad for the September and October intakes are facing financial difficulties due to delays in receiving their funds.
Of the 1,709 applicants this year, all eligible students were promised loans under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. However, payments have been delayed, leaving some students unable to travel while others have had to rely on family support to start their studies.
Several students have reported long waits for loan agreements, despite applying weeks in advance, with some stating they received only acknowledgements from the Ministry of Higher Education without further action.
The Ministry of Higher Education acknowledged the delays and said they were working with the Ministry of Finance to expedite the disbursement of funds. Officials cited lengthy administrative processes and cash flow challenges as reasons for the hold-up.
