Malaysia’s national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, is set to resume direct flights to the Maldives after a six-year hiatus, the Maldives Airport Company Ltd. (MACL) has confirmed.
Malaysia Airlines will operate daily flights on the Malé-Kuala Lumpur route starting this Thursday. The airline will utilise a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with a seating capacity of up to 174 passengers, for the reinstated service.
Malaysia has long been a preferred destination for Maldivian students and travellers, and the resumption of direct flights will enhance accessibility. Currently, Malaysia’s Batik Air serves the Maldives, but the return of Malaysian Airlines offers additional options for travellers seeking easy connections.
Despite facing challenges in recent years, including the disappearance of flight MH 370 in 2014 and the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia Airlines is now focused on expanding its operations. The recommencement flight is scheduled to land at Velana International Airport (VIA) on 1 August, MACL said in a statement.
MACL also expressed its commitment to supporting Malaysia Airlines’ return. MACL plans to hold a special welcome ceremony for Malaysia Airlines at VIA to celebrate this occasion.
