The administration will establish a twin company to provide services similar to that of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for major infrastructure development projects and transport services, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim confirmed during a press conference at the President’s Office on Sunday.
Ibrahim said the Cabinet made the determination because the burden on MTCC was overwhelming.
“As you know, MTCC has a lot of work to do now. The number of works is more than they can do,” he said.
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib had earlier said that 46 projects—among which included land reclamation, road construction, and port construction projects—awarded to MTCC had stalled.
According to Ibrahim, the administration is aligned on the creation of a new company to speed up the implementation of these projects, many of which have come to a standstill due to MTCC being awarded a barrage of projects.
MTCC is a publicly listed company with a majority stake held by the Maldives government.
