A collision involving a speedboat and a small fishing vessel near Ihavandhoo Island in Haa Alifu Atoll has left one person dead and two others injured, according to the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The incident occurred early Saturday night between Ihavandhoo and Huvahandhoo, a nearby uninhabited island.

The deceased has been identified as 68-year-old Abdul Rasheed Mohamed from Ihavandhoo Island.

Three individuals, including Mohamed, suffered varying injuries in the accident and were taken to the health centre on Ihavandhoo Island. Police, citing doctors, reported that Mohamed suffered serious head trauma and was in critical condition, and later succumbed to his injuries.

Media reports say Mohamed and his son were out fishing at the time of the incident which occurred shortly after sunset. The speedboat, with four people on board, reportedly crashed into the small fishing vessel. Two of the injured were passengers on the speedboat.
