President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday approved the recommendations put forth by the ‘Gedhoruveriya Committee’ regarding the future course of action for the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme. The President’s decision comes following careful evaluation of a paper submitted by the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, and in line with the cabinet’s recommendations.

The Gedhoruveriya Committee is set up to assess and finalise the list of individuals eligible for flats and land plots under the government’s ‘Binveriya’ and ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing schemes.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure submitted a paper to the cabinet, seeking approval for the Gedhoruveriya Committee’s recommendations on proceeding with individuals who are eligible under the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme. The Housing Ministry says further details regarding the decision will be released at a later date.

Considered the largest housing initiative undertaken in the country, the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme has received a total of 15,164 applications from 23,088 individuals. The government launched the initiative as part of its commitment to providing housing and ensuring a life of dignity for all citizens.

On Thursday, President Solih, with recommendation from the cabinet, also approved the allocation of flats to individuals who scored below 50 points in the Civil Service category and the allocation of 146 vacant flats from the Hiya housing scheme.
