President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday met members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Maldives at the House of Lords, reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the United Kingdom.

The meeting, which highlighted over six decades of bilateral cooperation, focused on key areas such as climate adaptation, democratic governance, justice sector reform, and defence collaboration.

“The Maldives remains committed to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the United Kingdom, anchored in shared values, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people ties,” Muizzu said during his address, according to a statement from the President’s Office.

The engagement was opened by Yasmin Qureshi, Co-Chair of APPG Maldives, who emphasised the international community’s obligation to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS). She called for “enhanced financial assistance, technical expertise, and sustained global commitment” to help countries like the Maldives tackle development and climate challenges.

Muizzu also expressed appreciation for the UK’s ongoing support in “justice sector reform, democratic consolidation, climate adaptation, defence cooperation, and capacity building,” the statement said.

He noted that educational and cultural exchanges had long characterised the Maldives–UK relationship and voiced confidence in the APPG’s “pivotal role in fostering dialogue and enhancing bilateral cooperation”.

The meeting featured what the President’s Office described as “meaningful and forward-looking discussions,” during which participants explored new avenues for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
